TRAUMA THERAPY

What is trauma?

Many people think that trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) only occur among people who have gone to war or been the victims of violent assault. Rather, trauma is any event that disrupts our sense of wellbeing and stability. Trauma can be a bad breakup, witnessing a car crash, or suddenly losing a loved one. Trauma can even occur second-hand when someone close to you is traumatized. Some typical symptoms of trauma can include:

  • Frequent “flashbacks” of the difficult thing that happened to you

  • Fear of situations or places that remind you of your trauma

  • Constant nervousness or edginess

  • Increase in use of alcohol, drugs, or other substances

  • Increase in risky behavior

  • Disconnect in relationships

  • Anger and sudden outbursts

    and more…

How can trauma therapy help?

At Charlotte Counseling & Wellness, you’ll first gain a comprehensive understanding of trauma and how it has affected your life. You’ll learn the mechanisms of PTSD and the way that it disrupts your nervous system’s ability to go back to baseline. You’ll learn how trauma affects your relationships, health, and behaviors. Then you’ll learn ways to reconnect with your body, your feelings, and those closest to you.

At Charlotte Counseling and Wellness, you’ll get the help you need to move on from the difficult things that have happened to you. We have a number of different approaches to treating trauma and PTSD that can be discussed with your therapist when you begin your work together.

These options include a highly-researched and effective form of treatment for trauma called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In EMDR, we use the same mechanism that Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep uses to restore balance and emotional wellbeing while you sleep. EMDR facilitates the processing of difficult memories that until treated, are incompletely processed. EMDR has an effectiveness rate of 84-90%.

Unexpected and shocking events in life are inevitable, but you don’t need to suffer from trauma. Make an appointment for trauma therapy in Charlotte, NC today.
